Anyone who has been to China will know what an important occasion breakfast is for locals. Street vendors come alive in the early hours cooking, steaming and frying delicious morning dishes, from spicy noodles to fluffy bao buns. Now, Michael Zee, creator of the popular SymmetryBreakfast Instagram account, is helping us recreate these dishes at home with his new book Zao Fan: Breakfast of China, with more than 40 mouthwatering recipes.
“When I first went to China,” Zee said, “I didn’t quite fully appreciate just how incredibly obsessed with food and eating they are as a people. It permeates every aspect of life. From the Kitchen Gods that sit above my cooker at home, to the architecture of the street, or the idioms of everyday language. Food is the totality of daily life, and breakfast is just the beginning.”
